TROMBONE TRIUMPHANT
What better instrument to celebrate the spirit and determination of the impressively large audience at Curry Rivel Music’s concert on Saturday 14th March? All those who shrugged off any anxieties about coronavirus were rewarded magnificently by two performers of consummate virtuosity.
The trombonist, Peter Moore, winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year at the age of 12 is now, at 24, Professor of Trombone at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Principal Trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra. His electrifying playing of older works – necessarily adapted for his instrument – and modern work written for the instrument, some with him in mind, delighted the audience and challenged the integrity of the roof structure of St Andrew’s Church.
No less skilled was his duo partner, Robert Thompson, whose full CV would threaten our relationship with the Editor of Curry Rivel News. Suffice to say, it glows. The lightning speed of his fingers left a blur as remarkable as the brilliance of his musicianship. Those who wrote with the trombone first in mind had no inclination to spare the accompanist and provided a double strand of delight to the audience.
The applause was rapturous and prolonged for yet another altogether splendid and memorable event.
Subject to what we all know lurks about us, our next concert will be on Saturday 25th April at 7.00 pm when we hope the Ruisi String Quartet will play for us.
