The Pelleas Ensemble is the winner of the St Martin’s Chamber Music Competition 2016. The competition awards an outstanding young ensemble with performance opportunities in the prestigious London venue of St Martin-in-the-Fields and around the UK with voluntary music groups in partnership with Making Music.
This concert is supported by Making Music
Formed at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2011, the group has established a well-founded reputation demonstrated by their taking the Grand Prize in the St Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Music Competition in 2016.
Notable also for their seldom being seen with a sheet of music on show, they have performed in the Wigmore Hall, St John’s Smith Square and many of the other venues where the highest quality of performance is appreciated.
Saturday 21st October 2017
We know that if the Countess of Munster Musical Trust supports a young musician, we are promised a chance to hear an artist whose path to glory is assured and we are grateful to the Trust for sponsoring this concert. Having started playing at the age of four, Alexandra’s path has already taken her to Texas, Japan, Vienna and Munich as well as the hot-spots of the UK, collecting many prizes and awards along the way. Her programme is likely to include works by Schumann, Enescu, Bartok, Brahms and Beethoven.

THE THORNE TRIO
- ILID LLWYD JONES – Oboe
- ESTHER SHERIDAN – Clarinet
- ALEXANDRA CALLANAN – Bassoon
These three young ladies are all graduates of the Royal College of Music where each, in the course of her studies, was awarded honours and prizes too numerous to set out. Apart from their ensemble work, all perform regularly with various national orchestras and are deeply involved in education and the support of new music. One piece, commissioned from Cecilia McDowall, is likely to feature in their concert along with the works of Mozart and Elgar.

THE CASTALIAN QUARTET
- SINI SIMONEM – Violin
- DANIEL ROBERTS – Violin
- CHARLOTTE BONNETON – Viola
- CHRISTOPHER GRAVES – Cello
This exciting Quartet, formed in 2011, is developing a reputation for creating an impact and is fast becoming a favourite with audiences in the UK and abroad. Over the past three years they have won top prizes at major international competitions and in 2016 they were selected for representation by the Young Classical Artists Trust which supports exceptional artists with the potential for international performing careers. Shortly after their visit to Curry Rivel, the Quartet will fulfil an invitation to perform the complete Haydn Op.76 String Quartets at the Wigmore Hall and we are hoping one of these will be included in their programme here.
