Dear Member, Friend, Supporter
You will not be surprised by this announcement that the concerts scheduled but unpublicised for March and April are cancelled. It is no more surprising that the Stetson University students who would have performed our free public concert – preliminary to our Friends’ Supper – in May have decided to sit tight in Florida.
We are hoping that vaccination will allow us to return to normality for a full season starting in September but it may be prudent to wait and see how the roll-out progresses. If those classified as least at risk only get their first jab after May and then have to wait for 12 weeks for the process to be completed, it is conceivable that we shall still be subject to restrictions.
Even though artists are desperate for opportunities to perform – and earn some money – it would be unkind to offer engagements which we might find ourselves unable to fulfil. For example, if we are still social-distancing, we should make a very small audience and the ambience would be dreadful. Having no access to loos could be more than inconvenient.
So, for the time being we shall hold back from arranging a programme but we are confident that when the smoke clears we shall be able to arrange our usual compelling opportunities for hearing the most talented musicians in the most agreeable company!
Meanwhile, I ask you to reflect on this. Your committee is collectively getting old. New blood is required. Please consider whether you could help to keep this beacon of culture alight. If you think you could, please give me or one of the committee a call and find out what might be involved. A phone call will not commit you to anything but you may well find that your modesty about your abilities is entirely unfounded. We are not a committee of accomplished musicians!
With best wishes for your health and well-being,
Dear Member, Friend or Supporter,
You will not be surprised to know that we have reluctantly concluded that it will not be possible to resume our programme of concerts before the New Year.
Our programme for the season was planned and fixed a very long time ago and it grieves us that we are letting down not only our loyal audience but also those artists – frequently newly launched – upon whom the financial impact of the coronavirus has been enormous for many months. We suspect that very few qualify for any state support.
Normally by this time we would have sent out details of the programme with an invitation to sign up for membership but, since what is on offer is so very uncertain, there is no question of your being asked to subscribe to concerts which may never take place or indeed, to anything else. Moreover, we are well aware that many of you were short-changed at the end of last season. Adjustments will be made in due course.
When that “due course” will permit a return to an approximation of normality remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Curry Rivel Music continues to be committed to its objectives of providing first-class music in the heart of Somerset. We hope to be in touch again before long with better news.
Meanwhile, we hope you remain well and cheerful.
With best wishes
On behalf of the Committee of Curry Rivel Music
With regret, we have had to cancel the concerts which were to have been held on Saturday 25th April and Friday 29th May 2020. The Buffet Supper for the Friends of Curry Rivel Music has also been cancelled.
We hope that when the new season opens in September we shall be back to normal but we shall keep this website updated with any news. Go to Concert Programme 2020-2021 to see what delights await you then.
We look forward to seeing you before too long.
Not long now until the next Curry Rivel Music concert on 14th March. An intrigueing combination of trombone and piano. Our trombonist, Peter Moore, was the youngest-ever winner of the BBC Young Musician competition in 2008, and his reputation has continued to grow since then. Well worth an evening of your time! Programme and information from 14/03/20 Peter Moore, Trombone.
The Curry Rivel Music concerts for the next season have been announced, here. Put them in your diary now!
We now have a programe for this Saturday’s guitar concert, and it’s a great selection. A lovely mix of sublime and foot-tapping. If you have been thinking of dragging friends and neighbours along to a Curry Rivel Music concert, this would be a good one to choose. Details from here.
We occasionally let you know of other good concerts in the area, and as this one features our very own Rowan Patterson, we just had to post it.

Don’t forget to come along to St Andrew’s church, Currry Rivel, this Saturday at 7 pm, where we have a lovely programme of music for oboe and piano from Katherine Bryer and Irena Radić. There are solo pieces for both instruments as well as the duet, so lots of variety. Programme and details of the musicians can be found in the Concert Pogramme section.
In just a bit over a month’s time, our Curry Rivel musical treats start for another season.
First, on Saturday 14th September, we have a lovely oboe and piano concert for you. Katherine Bryer and Irena Radić will be playing an excellent variety of pieces together and solo, from composers familiar and not-yet-familiar. Programme and details can be found at 14/09/19 Oboe & Piano.
Short descriptions and dates for the rest of the season can be found at Concert Programme 2019-2020. Put all the dates in your diary now; you won’t regret it!
We now have the programme and more details of the next concert; two wonderful pianists playing on one piano. It should be interesting to watch, and they have chosen a lovely and varied selection of pieces. More information at 13/04/19 Four Hands – One Piano.
